Bella Martha

Movies offer such a breather, especially when you're going through a rough time. That said, it doesn't make much sense to me to watch movies about unbelievably beautiful, together single moms who end up at the end of day with their head on George Clooney's shoulder. I've tried to suggest a few movies that might speak to single mothers because they are about overcoming incredible obstacles. My first suggestion is a sweet movie called Bella Martha. An unmarried women who is a very serious chef is suddenly thrown into the position of having to raise her young niece by herself. She drags the little girl to the restaurant at night to sleep on the kitchen counters while she struggles to prevent her Italian co-chef from usurping her job. Since I have no intention of suggesting movies here that are bummers, I 'm glad to tell you that it all works out in the end.

Written and Directed by Sandra Nettelbeck; Paramount Classics; 2001; German with English subtitles

Update - This movie was remade in English in 2007 as "No Reservations" with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart
