My experiences as a single mother have led me to suspect that single mothers are lightening rods for social anxiety. It struck me that it's time to employ every technique known to journalism to battle the stereotypes that still cling to single mothers in this country. To kick things off, I'd like to invoke Eleanor Roosevelt, orphan at ten, First Lady at 49 and a powerful advocate for the rights of minorities and women. She pointed out that "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." And then direct your gaze to the image of Rosie the Riveter at the top of this post, a great visual reminder that no matter how tough it is, no matter how tired you are, no matter how rough the road, never doubt that you won't find the strength within yourself, never doubt that You Can Do It!
